By Destin Davis ddavis@bentoncourier.com

Have you ever wondered how to research your family history?

The Saline County Library and the Hot Springs Village Genealogy Society will be hosting an event from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Benton library branch focused on genealogy.

Genealogy is the study of families, family history and the tracing of family lineages. The day will be split into three sections starting with a morning session from members of the Hot Springs Village Genealogical Society.

Genealogist Kirk Larson will provide a morning session teaching attendees how to begin researching their family history and about the resources available to them online and from their public libraries. Larson has worked with major genealogists from across the country.

Larson will review free websites and databases offered by the Saline County Library and the physical resources offered as well. They will also highlight the way libraries across the country work together through interlibrary loans, allowing libraries to provide books or resources that may not be available locally.

Participation for the event is free and lunch will be provided by Chicken Salad Chick.

Registration however is required and can be done by visiting the Saline County Library website, salinecountylibrary.org, and going to the events page.

After lunch, Barb Pinkey of the Village Genealogical Society will lead two escape-room themed programs, one will be done in class and the other can be taken home for further

exploration.

Attendees will have the chance to learn tips and tricks using several free genealogy websites to solve 10 clues using beginner, intermediate and some advanced skills to summarize a real family story.

Alan Robinette, community librarian for Saline County, said they right now they have about 15 people registered and he would like to see that number double. The maximum amount of registrants for Saturday’s event is 50.

Robinette said the event is open to all skill levels. This is an adult class, but if people under 18 are interested in genealogy they are still encouraged to register.
