Panthers rout to start host Classic

BENTON – After suffering their first loss of the season to Cabot this past Tuesday at home, the Benton Panthers opened the Benton Holiday Classic in fine fashion Thursday at Benton Arena. Taking on the Alma Airedales in the opener, the Panthers turned a close game after the first quarter into a rout, winning 62-37.

The Panthers (2-1) led 13-12 after one, but blew up in the second quarter with sophomore Terrion Burgess taking over scoring 10 of his game-high 21 points for a

23-6 advantage in the frame to double up Alma 36-18 at the half. Junior Carter Hedden added five in the quarter, with senior Jon Bell scoring four.

Benton took full control in the third, again doubling up the Airedales 16-8 for the 52-26 advantage going into

the final quarter.

After Burgess’ gamehigh 21, Bell followed with 11 points and Hedden had eight. Ten total Panthers got in on the scoring with senior Kyle Payne adding five, senior Tyre Jemerson and junior Brayden Stamper four each, sophomore A’Darien Gray and senior Braydon Washington three each, sophomore Sam Jacovelli two and senior Brady Rook one.

The Panthers played Farmington on Friday night and wrap the Classic today vs. Jacksonville at 2:20 p.m. at Benton Arena.
